NEXT WEEK! Tocqueville on the Democratic "Heart Disease" of Individualism

Tocqueville on the Democratic “Heart Disease”
of Individualism

A lecture free and open to the public (no ticket required) by
Peter Augustine Lawler
Dana Professor of Government, Berry College

Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America explains why individualism is the primary
threat to liberty in a modern democracy. Individualism, as he describes it, is the very
opposite of personal assertiveness. It is the apathetic withdrawal into oneself, based
on the mistaken judgment that love is more trouble than it is worth. Individualism, by
isolating citizens from one another, makes them easy prey for despots. And
Tocqueville’s fear is that the democratic development might culminate in a kind of
“soft despotism” of meddlesome, schoolmarmish bureaucrats. Tocqueville also
notices, however, that Americans have some pretty singular ways of combating
individualism, including religion, strong local government, the moral doctrine of selfinterested
cooperation with others, and a kind of spirit of association. So today’s
students of Tocqueville sometimes misunderstand him by exaggerating the real threat
of soft despotism in our country.

Professor Lawler has written or edited a dozen books. His most recent include
Postmodernism Rightly Understood, Aliens in America: The Strange Truth About Our Souls,
Stuck with Virtue: The American Individual and Our Biotechnological Future, and Homeless and
at Home in America.

Syracuse Study Health Policy & Law in Amsterdam

[Posted as a courtesy on behalf of Syracuse University Abroad]

Syracuse University Abroad has been offering a summer program on "Comparative Health Policy and Law" for over 10 years.  A few years ago, we added Amsterdam to our travels, because of our desire to expose students to end of life decision making and physician assisted suicide issues from the Dutch perspective.  This summer students will travel to London, Amsterdam and Geneva from May 27th to June 26th, 2010.  This is a six-credit course available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In London and Amsterdam, students will cover such issues as access to health care, reproductive choice policies, care of mentally ill, end of life decision-making, and assistance in dying.  In addition to exploring these issues from an American perspective through lectures and readings, students have the opportunity to have guest lecturers from the respective cities present their country's unique way of approaching these subjects.  In Geneva, students will visit the World Health Organization and explore public health issues around the world.  This course is most suitable for upper division and graduate students with an interest in health law, medicine, health-policy, health systems management, political science, bio-ethics, and related fields.

Interested students should contact the Syracuse University Abroad online at suabroad.syr.edu or by e-mail at suabroad@syr.edu. Those with questions about program content should feel free to contact me directly by telephone at 315-443-9419 or e-mail at tzappola@syr.edu. FSU Law's Summer for Undergraduates Program

[Posted as a courtesy on behalf of Florida State University College of Law]

The 19th Annual Summer for Undergraduates Program will take place May 17-June 11, 2010. Applications will be accepted beginning October 1, 2009, and must be postmarked by Friday, March 26, 2010.

Overview
The Summer for Undergraduates Program at Florida State Law is the largest of its kind and has become a model for other law schools nationally. Approximately 60 undergraduate college students will be chosen from the applicant pool to participate in the four-week long program. During those four weeks, we focus on three main components:

•Classroom Experience — Daily classes are taught by law school professors and writing instructors. Lectures simulate first-year law classes and familiarize students with the functions of the American legal system. Writing workshops help students to develop their writing and communication skills.

•Law School Admissions Process — Students are given the opportunity to talk to the admissions staff and committee regarding the important aspects of the law school application process. This includes practical workshops on completing the application, writing personal statements, LSAT exam preparation, writing resume and cover letters, financing law school and individualized career planning.

•Careers in the Law — While the program is academic in nature, there are a number of exciting and enjoyable activities that take place outside of the classroom, such as: visits to the Florida Supreme Court and local law firms, moot court oral arguments, and visits from prominent attorneys in a variety of practice areas.

Eligibility
College students enrolled at two-and four-year institutions, in all majors and from all backgrounds, are invited to apply following their freshman year. We particularly welcome students from groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Because one purpose of the program is to help students direct their remaining time in college to best prepare for law school, freshmen, sophomores and juniors are given preference in the admissions process. Students who will have earned their degree prior to the start of the program will not be eligible for admission.

Program Costs
There is no tuition or room and board charge for this program. Florida State Law provides room and board in residence-hall accommodations, course materials and a $500 stipend to all participants. Students are responsible for their travel expenses to and from Tallahassee.

How to Apply
In order to apply, students must complete a two-page application for admission. Applicants are also required to submit a resume, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a current official transcript. Each application is carefully reviewed in its entirety by the program's admissions committee.

We're looking for students who can come in at least 6 hours each week. This will be a hands-on internship with real responsibilities, and the more time someone can spend with us, the greater the responsibilities they'll take on.

If you're interested, I'm happy to pass Mr. La Rue's contact information on.
